About the School of Conservation Sciences at BU
Our research within the Centre for Conservation Ecology & Environmental Change comprises of Conservation Biogeography and combines Conservation Ecology with Geoinformatics. We focus on understanding environmental change by gauging its impact on biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services on which human livelihoods depend. Geoinformatics plays a crucial role by providing the data sets needed to explore spatial and temporal changes in the environment, and by generating the outputs needed to inform policy and practice. Our research includes policy-relevant topics such as conservation management and habitat restoration, protected area conservation, sustainable resource use and environmental risk assessment.
Facilities & Resources
The courses are fully supported by a wide range of technical and scientific facilities. These include dedicated research and high specification analytical laboratories, survey and geophysical equipment, GIS and spatial information suite, a cartographic studio, map library and a dedicated postgraduate student computer laboratory.
Bournemouth is exceptionally well located for field-based learning, situated on the Dorset coast, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bournemouth lies within easy reach of outstanding coastal environments including Poole Harbour, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Chesil Beach, Isle of Wight and the Solent. Dorset also offers outstanding environments of global importance for conservation including the Wessex Downs, the Dorset heaths, Poole Harbour and the New Forest. It is one of the most diverse counties in Britain for many groups of organisms, including plants, reptiles, insects and birds.
Academic staff have a wide range of collaborative links at the international level, providing opportunities for placements and possible employment with organisations such as IUCN, UNEP, UNESCO, FAO, WWF International and Conservation International.
