"After 7+ years of work experience, I decided to do an MBA, the choice of School was important because I wanted a School that would provide practical experience, networking opportunities and quality teaching. The Norwich Business School MBA met this criteria, the programme is structured with three real consultancy projects. That way, there is no break of work experience on my CV because of coming to do an MBA." Ehia, MBA student
Our MBA ensures that the holder has an unusual mix of theoretical background and practical application. In addition to the kitbag of the usual business models and theory, our students graduate with the practical knowledge gained from both our interactive approach to teaching and the experience of three real consultancy exercises. These exercises are undertaken with well established organisations such as the East of England Energy Group and Carbon Connections.
Consultancy projects are not simply placements where a student works full-time in an organisation for a small period of time. Consultancy projects take place over a sustained period of about twelve weeks with groups of students acting as consultancy teams to address real problems and issues in organisations. All of this activity is undertaken whilst, at the same time, attending the taught units typical of an MBA programme.
In addition to showing their analytical and creative skills, the students practise negotiation and time management (they work to a proposal agreed with the client) and learn to work as a group toward a high level objective. The projects are chosen so that models and frameworks taught within the course can be applied. All of this is underpinned with 30 hours of formal education and training in consultancy skills.
Chartered Management Institute
Our MBA students have the opportunity to graduate with a joint qualification - MBA and Diploma in Management Consultancy (the latter awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). The School has been awarded Approved Centre status for the Diploma by the CMI. This ability to be an internal or an external consultant is an important part of senior management competency and Norwich Business School students are the only students in the UK who are able to achieve this joint qualification during their one period of study.
Consultancy Projects
Breckland District Council
As the main local government authority, Breckland is keen to develop a substantial area of land as a low-carbon business park. It faces an issue in that its rural location means there is limited power supply and energy supply must be commensurate with the philosophy of the project. The consultancy team explored many options with experts in many fields, e.g. low-carbon supply, financing projects, etc. The result was a prospectus to be issued to the industry along with a road map for the development of the next stage of the project. It is of note that, prior to the MBA consultancy project, the client had already looked at this problem twice, once with a professional consultancy project, yet the MBA team has achieved the most.
EEEGR (East of England Energy Group)
The low-carbon economy is a phrase often used but what does it look like? Working with EEEGR (representing 300 national and international members in the oil, gas, renewables and nuclear energy industry) the team critically assessed how a low-carbon supply chain be described and created. They developed a simple but valuable questionnaire for deployment to EEEGR members to enable them to highlight their low-carbon activities. This is linked to EEEGR's innovative Mapergy geographical visualisation software to allow a low-carbon supply chain to be presented to a global audience.
Profitable carbon reduction within business
Four student consultancy teams are working with four organisations to identify how business can achieve meaningful and linked carbon reduction and cost savings appropriate to their business. Four diverse firms are being studied: a major construction firm; a commercial farm; a small family-owned and run gravel extraction firm, and a city office-based financial training company. The learning from these projects will help each firm improve their business and carbon performance in the low-carbon economy and key learning points will be presented in best-practice case studies for dissemination into these industries.
Carbon Connections
For this consultancy the students all worked together to produce a high quality commercial event of value to this carbon venture fund. An innovative event 'CarbonSynergy08' was created and delivered that attracted a very high quality industry audience from across the UK. It generated good feedback from participants and a financial surplus that is being donated to charity. Carbon Connections will now use the outcomes in its development and activities.
