Institute for the Environment
Brunel University has a track record of excellence in both research and training in Environmental Science, technology and management that stretches back over three decades. In August 2004 a new Institute for the Environment was created in recognition of this fact, bringing together world class research groups both from within the University and around the world. The new Institute will build on existing strengths in research and postgraduate teaching and develop new areas of activity with partners in government, industry and academic colleagues in Britain and around the World.
Excellence in Research
The Institute for the Environment includes highly regarded international researchers, as illustrated by the fact that two of its staff are in the top 10 of the most highly cited environmental scientists in the world in the last 10 years. Research undertaken has had a considerable impact. For example, it has led to the restriction or banning of the use of some chemicals not previously considered to be responsible for adverse impacts on wildlife. Members of the Institutes research teams have also won prizes for their research such as the Chartered Institute of Wastes Managements Millennium competition to devise a waste management strategy for London.
Excellence in Training
The Institute is a leader in Postgraduate Training and through its masters and flexible research degree programmes it has trained over 500 environmental practitioners, technologists, regulators, managers and consultants world-wide. Organisations who have sponsored their staff through these programmes include: the Environment Agency, the Royal Air Force, the Ministry of Defence, the London Boroughs, County Councils, BAT, Castle Cement, Jaguar, Ford, Rover, Hi-Tec Tyres, RMC Aggregates, KPMG, Laing Technology, WSP Consultants, Thames Water and many more.
