In 2000, about 10,000 flathead mullets surfaced to the water of Taehwa River in the city of Ulsan, Korea. The River suffered from a terrible contamination from domestic sewage and all kinds of wastewater flowing into the river and became a river of death as Ulsan grew into a national industrial city. This incident was a wake-up call for the city to begin ecological restoration of the river. Now, with the highest level of water quality, it has not only become a habitat for salmons and otters but also become the largest habitat for migratory birds in Korea.

Green Roof: restoration and development technology of urban ecosystem

At the end of 1960s, the concept of green roofs spread across Europe with Germany being the center of the trend. Green roofs not only provide a habitat for animals and plants alike, but they are also eco-friendly and economica.l: They reduce heat island effect in the cities, and provide heat insulation for buildings which help to reduce heating and cooling costs. In Germany, almost half of the local governments provide financial incentives for green roofs.

Technical Overview

  • Selection of plant types, such as climbing, winding and leaning plants, that are suitable for vegetation on walls such as Boston Ivy and development of a solid soil mat that can be used for an artificial vegetation system.

Strengths compared to the existing technologies

  • Can be installed in various locations such as retaining walls made of the earth and wood, high-rise buildings, steel structures and so on.
  • Integrated maintenance and management with other vegetation areas are made possible by developing and applying a natural circulation type maintenance and management system
