Breathing new life into contaminated soil: soil remediation project at Jang Hang Refinery, South Korea

The soil around former Jang Hang Refinery was once contaminated by heavy metals; but now it is recovering thanks to the Ministry of Environment's (MOE) soil remediation project. The South Korean MOE developed a "Comprehensive Plan to Improve Soil Contamination near Jang Hang Refinery" and began the soil remediation project in 2009. To this end, the MOE has implemented soil washing and other alternative solutions such as cultivating plants that are highly efficient in removing heavy metals from soil.

A system to manage potential contamination sites: land registry system

Many countries in Europe are preparing a legal basis for comprehensive conservation and management of the soil. In accordance with the Soil Protection Act, the Netherlands has developed a contaminated land registry system based on the inventory of potential contamination sites. Germany Environment Agency (UBA) has built and is managing a list of contamination history, including the areas that are highly likely to be contaminated.

Technical Overview

  • Developed a real-time contamination detection system that can detect and analyze contamination data by using a sensor that can measure soil contamination level.

Strengths compared to the existing technologies

  • It can detect contamination range and the level of contamination in a short period of time after a thorough investigation of the contamination area by oil, such as a gas station.
